Whistling Straits boasts 2 18-hole courses: The Straits Course and The Irish Course. Both are designed by Pete Dye, and opened for play in 1998 and 2000 respectively. The Straits Course is a walking-only, links-style course that is located along two miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. The land was previously used as an Army base, with leftover toxic storage tanks, dilapidated runways and empty sheds making up the landscape. Dye put the land to good use, however. The fairways are forty to fifty yards wide, which helps when the wind kicks up off of the lake. The four par 3's sit along the coastline and are the most scenic holes on the course. "GOLF Magazine" selected this course 37th on its 1999 list of the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S.'' "GOLFWEEK" selected it 11th among "America's 100 Best Modern Courses" for 1999. Greens fees include caddies, however, gratuities are not included. The newer Irish Course opened in August 2000. According to the course website, The Irish Course offers "more than a hint of the Emerald Isle in its style and personality." This links style course meanders through grasslands along Lake Michigan. Four streams intersect the course and are crossed by 10 bridges. The course measures 7,201 yards from the tips and offers five sets of tees to accommodate any handicap.
