This course marks the West Coast debut of Rees Jones, who worked for twenty years designing courses on the East Coast before expanding westward. This is a multi-theme layout of sand dunes, water holes and pines that is reminiscent of Jones father's Spyglass Hill further down the rocky coastline. The course is bordered on the ocean side by the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Hole #6, a 444-yard, par 4, was voted one of "The Best 18 Holes You Can Play" by "Golf Digest" in 1997. This hole has wetlands to the right off the tee and a forest of Monterrey Pines to the left. A fairway bunker rests at the corner of the dogleg right fairway, and a grass bunker and sand bunker must be carried to reach the putting surface. "Golf Digest" selected this as the "Best New Public Course" in 1993. The same publication chose it as the 5th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and the 6th best for 1997-98. "GOLF Magazine" rated this course 72nd in the category of "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." for 1998. "GOLFWEEK" placed it 90th among "America's 100 Best Modern Courses" for 1997. A putting course is available at this facility as well. The 6,085-yard men's tee also has a ladies' course rating of 76.5 and slope of 131. The 5,346-yard ladies' tee also has a men's course rating of 65.8 and slope of 111.
