It is well known that the Rock Spring golf course was designed and constructed by Charles "Steamshovel" Banks. The "Steamshovel" moniker is attributed to the primary tool he used to craft many of his greenside bunkers. Banks is noted in the northeast for the outstanding courses he designed. In his honor, Rock Spring participates in the "Banks Cup" golf tournament, contested annually by the better golfers from each of the clubs he designed.

What is not as well known is that the Rock Spring course routing was structured by Seth Raynor, another famous name in golf course design. Although the founding fathers of Rock Spring intended to build a nine-hole course, it was Seth Raynor who persuaded them to build a full eighteen holes.

This course has well-bunkered fairways. Water that comes into play on a few holes and all the tee boxes and greens are elevated.
