These two courses are very different. The Ocean Course (formerly known as the Kona Course) is a seaside course, and the Ali'i Mountain Course was built on an inland hillside. There are lava areas on both courses, which are played as lateral hazards. Both courses have water hazards in play. The Ocean Course has several holes overlooking the ocean. The tee on hole #13 is near a blow hole. An ancient Hawaiian slide is located between holes #1 and #10 on the Alii Course. The fairways on the courses are fairly wide and the greens large and fast.
