The club hosted the PGA Championship in 1993 as well as many other years, and the 1920, 1931, 1957, and 1979 U.S. Opens were held here. "Golf Digest" rated this course 35th best out of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for 1995-96, and 33rd best for 1997-98. It was also rated as the 3rd "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and the 4th best in 1997-98. In addition, "GOLF Magazine" awarded it 31st among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, 32nd in 1997 and 39th in 1999. "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 28th among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997, 26th for 1998 and 44th for 1999. Byron Nelson, who holds the record of eleven consecutive PGA Tournament wins, served as the golf professional at this club. |
