Route 2 Hot Springs, VA 24445 p: 540.839.3083 This hilly course, which was named by "GOLF Magazine" to its 1998 list of "Gold Medal Resorts," does feature a bit of flat terrain on the back nine, but you should still expect some uneven lies. There are subtle breaks on the greens, so reading them can be difficult at times. The fairways are fairly narrow and lined with hardwood, oak, maple, pine, and cedar trees. All of the water hazards are natural streams, and they come into play on eleven holes. In addition, sand bunkers are spread throughout the course. The signature hole is #12, a 476-yard, par 4, requiring a long tee shot, then an approach shot to a green protected by both water and large trees. This hole leaves little room for error. Holes #16 and #17, both par 5's, feature slight dogleg fairways. This course was cut directly out of the forest in the mountains. The only machine used was a steam shovel and all the other work was done by hand. "Golf Digest" rated this 39th best out of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for 1995-96, and also rated as the #1 "Best in State" course from 1995 through 1998. Other awards from "Golf Digest" include 12th in the category of "Top 75 Resort Courses" for 1992, 4th best out of the "Top 75 Upscale Courses" for 1996, and 42nd among "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for 1997-98. In addition, "GOLF Magazine" rated it 43rd out of the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, 49th for 1997 and 42nd for 1999. The same publication chose it 12th among the "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." for 1998. "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 33rd among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997, 38th in 1998 and 28th in 1999. This course is part of the Homestead Resort, which also includes the Lower Cascades and the Old Course. The nine hole rate is available after 3 PM. |
